My First (and Only) Celebrity Book Signing

Me and Robby Benson at his book signing - July 2007

Okay, so this post won’t be the about the most recent event, but I wanted to share my personal story about a special celebrity book signing that I attended last July.  Robby Benson appeared at Vroman’s bookstore in Pasadena, CA, to promote his book “Who Stole the Funny?”

I was especially excited about this event because I have been a fan of Robby Benson’s for years and I was eager to meet him in person.  The event took place upstairs, and while it was not swarming with people, the anticipation to see Robby Benson was palpable.  When Robby finally entered the room, his eyes twinkled and he smiled as if a thousand people had shown up (in actuality, it was more like 30 or 40 people).  Robby read

excerpts from his book, answered questions from the audience, and finally, we had an opportunity to have Robby sign our books and pose with us for pictures.  I made 2 friends while I was waiting in line, and we all agreed that we would take pictures for the other when we posed with Robby.  As I watched Robby Benson interact with his fans, I was all the more impressed.  He was humble, gentle, witty and extremely friendly.  I was the exact opposite when it came to my turn to have him sign my book and pose for pictures.  I was the youngest in the room (besides a teenager who had accompanied his mother) and I think that my age was showing.  I was so nervous, I can’t even remember what I said to him, but he wrote “To K…, With Love, Robby Benson” in my book.  Be still, my beating heart!  I asked if I could take a picture with him, and then I kept saying “thank you.”  How embarrassing!

I’m writing about this now because a)  there may be an avid Robby Benson fan out there who would like to see the picture and hear about my experience and b)  I never blogged about it on my facebook or myspace accounts.
