According to a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, a majority of Americans (52%) now think that religious organizations should stay out of politics.  The survey also showed that the greatest increase in this sentiment is among – surprise! – conservatives.

There is also evidence that a growing number of people are uncomfortable with candidates discussing how religious they are.

Highlights:

  • In 2004, 30 percent of Conservatives said that religious organizations should stay out of politics.  That figure is now at 50 percent.
  • In 2004, 40 percent said that they felt uncomfortable when a politician discussed how religious they were.  The figure has now increased to 46 percent.
  • In the new survey, 48 percent said that religious conservatives had too much control over the Republican Party.  Conversely, 43 percent said that non-religious liberals had too much control over the Democratic Party.

Despite the fact that Americans have a growing concern about the role of religion in politics, the new survey shows that a majority continue to say that it is important for politicians to have strong religious beliefs.
